Upstate New York Teen Bible Quizzing Annual Report

2005-2006

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” Romans 15:4

The one thing that our teens need most in this day and age is hope.  It is in God’s word that we find real hope that endures.  This Quiz season was a difficult one in many ways.  In the fall our Plattsburgh Church suffered the loss of a coach who went home to be Jesus.  That same team received news a few weeks later that the father of two of their quizzers was given 6 months to live because of a brain tumor.  Just 1 week before finals our Binghamton team lost their youth pastor, and mother of one of their quizzers in a car accident.  Without hope these churches, families, and teens could not keep going.  In Christ Jesus and through his word we receive hope.

We had 14 churches participate in our quiz program this year including our team from Ottawa, Canada.  There were 84 teens that participated over the course of the year.  We had 7 tournaments including an invitational in which we invited other districts.  The invitational had a smaller turn out than hoped for, but we had a great time including a Pizza Party with ENC reps.

We had 3 teams from our district participate in the Tri-State Tournament at MVNU in November, Owego, Trinity, and Rochester Grace.

Heather Moore took 1st place in that tournament of over 500 quizzers winning a $1500 scholarship.

For the season we had 6 quizzers who completed all of the memory work and 1 that memorized all of Romans and James.  The season statistics and financial records for this year are attached to this report.

We have 16 quizzers and 8-10 adults attending the Regional Tournament April 27-30th.  We also have a district team attending the National tournament at SNU in Oklahoma July 5th -8th.

Something happened at finals this year that reinforced my convictions about the importance of Bible Quizzing.  The goal of our program is to hide God’s Word in the hearts of our teens.  One of the graduates of the quiz program comes to most of our quizzes as an official.  In fact we have 6-7 college age and older who have come up through quizzing who are still involved as officials and coaches.  This one individual shared with me that he was writing a paper on for a class in New Testament Theology, on the Theology of justification by faith.  He found some verses and began writing and as he wrote more and more verses came to mind from his studying of Romans as a Bible quizzer.  This makes it all worth while that these teens as they become adults are able to recall the scriptures they learned and apply them to the different aspects of their lives.

A servant Of Christ Jesus,

Bob Moore
